Sales tax in Canada
Canada has no city or county sales taxes. The rate depends only on the province: the federal GST of 5 % everywhere, plus a provincial tax or one harmonized tax (HST).
The taxes
- GST: Goods and Services Tax, federal, 5 % in every province and territory. In Alberta and the three territories it is the only sales tax.
- HST: Harmonized Sales Tax: the federal and provincial taxes in one rate. Ontario 13 %, Nova Scotia 14 %, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island 15 %.
- PST: Provincial Sales Tax, added to the GST: British Columbia 7 %, Saskatchewan 6 %. Manitoba calls its tax RST (7 %).
- QST: Quebec Sales Tax, 9.975 %, added to the GST. It is figured on the price without the GST, so there is no tax on tax.
Groceries
Basic groceries such as bread, milk, fruit and vegetables are zero-rated everywhere in Canada: no sales tax at all. Snacks, candy, drinks and restaurant meals are taxed.

These pages summarise the rules Summalo uses. They are estimates, not tax advice. At the register, the store's receipt is what counts.
In Summalo, switch on Canada under Settings, then Extras. It shows each tax on its own line, in Canadian dollars (CA$), and can convert to your currency with the ECB rate.
