States without sales tax: where shopping can be cheaper
Four states charge no general sales tax: Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire and Delaware. Alaska has no state sales tax, but many of its cities and boroughs charge their own.
The states
| State | Rule |
|---|---|
| Oregon | No state or local sales tax on most purchases. |
| Montana | No state sales tax; a few resort towns charge their own local tax. |
| New Hampshire | No general sales tax; separate taxes on meals and hotel rooms. |
| Delaware | No sales tax; businesses pay a tax on their gross receipts, which shops may price in. |
| Alaska | No state sales tax, but many cities and boroughs charge a local tax. |
What “no sales tax” does not mean
Other taxes exist: some places charge taxes on hotel rooms, restaurant meals, fuel or alcohol, and a few tourist towns add their own local taxes. The tag price can also be set with that in mind. Always read the receipt.
Shopping near a border
A short trip to a state without sales tax can save money on large purchases, but fuel and time cost money too. The app compares places near you for the item you scan.
